If you have an old cat, you can help make its bed more comfortable by placing heated tiles underneath it. Use a 12″ terra cotta tile and heat it by putting it in a 200ºF oven for 20 minutes. Use an old towel to wrap around it, then place it beneath the cat’s blanket or bed. You can even switch it out every few hours.

Spray bitter apple on electrical cords to keep cats away from them. If your cat plays with cords, put them up and out of the way, or you can hide them in old paper towel rolls. You can do this by bundling them and tucking them in the cardboard rolls that are used for paper towels. Electronic items with thin, tempting cords should always be put away when not in use.

Nice furniture and cat claws don’t get along very well. Purchase a scratching post to stop your cat from destroying your home. Teach your cat to scratch this instead of the legs of a couch or sofa. It may take some time, but will be worth the effort and expense.

It can be hard to prevent your cat from jumping on the counter. Cats like to be up high, where they can watch everything going on. Provide your cat with a few high places it can uses. Putting a cat tower in or near the kitchen can help keep the cats from laying on the counter.

Think about putting a microchip in your pet. Even an indoor cat could someday jump through an open window. Tags and collars are great, but if a cat escapes them, there’s no guaranteeing they’ll make it home safe and sound. A microchip will hold the contact information to reach you and it’s only about as big as a piece of rice. These days, pretty much all shelters and vet offices have scanners that can read these chips, and because they’re beneath your pet’s skin, they won’t ever get lost.

Never let a cat become bored. Cats require plenty of exercise. But many cat owners ignore that need. A bored cat runs the risk of developing depression and obsessive compulsive disorders that may harm them or something in your home. Give them plenty of room to exercise and a wide selections of toys. Be sure your cat has something they can climb and something they can scratch if they stay inside.

Make sure your cat gets lots of love. They give us love, and we need to return it to them. Cats thrive when treated like part of the household, so involve them in daily activities around the house. They want to know they are a valuable part of the family too.
